Socorro Baseball Team makes National Poll PDF Print E-mail

Socorro Baseball Team

The Socorro High School Baseball Team is named as one of the Super 25 High School Baseball Teams by USA Today.  In the South region, the team is ranked in 10th behind other Texas teams and teams from Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. Ranked 12th in the poll, the team now prepares for its area playoff game against Mansfield Summit in Midland. TX.   The team will play its first game on Friday, May 9 in the best of three series.  With a 32-2 record, the team advanced after defeating Lubbock 5-0 and 12-0 in bi-district play.  In its game against Lubbock, Socorro pitchers Gabriel Aguilar struck out 14 batters in Game 1, and Bobby Mares struck out seven in Game 2. George Stoltz went 5-for-7 at the plate with a home run during the series.

In addition to its national ranking, Socorro won the District 1-5A Championship and was listed as No. 4 by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.  In March, the team was listed in first place.  Previously, the team highest ranking had been third place.

“We had been ranked state-wide but this is the first year we have been on the national poll. It’s nice to be recognized. I attribute this to the program, what we have done in the past and what we are doing this year,” said Coach Chris Forbes.  “I tell the kids we need to keep playing.  They have been positive year round and hey know they have a good team.  They have great confidence in each other.”

Socorro Baseball Schedule
Game 1 begins at 3 p.m. Friday at Odessa High School.
Game 2 begins at noon Saturday and Game 3, if necessary, is 30 minutes after Game 2.
