SISD Students receive All Star Scholarships PDF Print E-mail

SHS students recieve scholarship from All Star Football Classic FundSeven SISD students receive scholarships from the All Star Football Classic.  In December, these students were among the hundreds of area students who participated in the Annual All Star Game.  As participants they were eligible for one of 20 plus scholarships. Receiving $1000 scholarships are from Americas High School Cynthia Carmona, from Montwood High School Julian Hernandez, Casey Rangel and David Reza and from Socorro High School Lorena Garcia, Robert Lopez and Christopher Ramirez.

“I really didn’t know about this scholarship until I participated in the game. This will really help out,” said Socorro senior Lorena Garcia who plans on studying medicine at Brown University.  Joining her in the band was Montwood senior Julian Hernandez, who will head to Baylor University while Carmona, Lopez and Rangel were on the sidelines as athletic trainers. Carmona and Rangel will go to UTEP and Lopez plans on studying physical therapy at Texas Tech University. Socorro Football player Christopher Ramirez, who played starting safety, will head to Cisco Junior College to study mechanical engineering.  Also on the East Team was Montwood quarterback David Reza, who is considering Texas Tech and UT Austin.

“All the proceeds of the game go to students who participated on the football teams, the band, JROTC and cheer teams,” said Game Chairperson Rick Hernandez. “We hold this game to highlight area students who are overachievers.”

They along with other scholarship recipients were recognized at a dinner held on April 8, 2008.  The organization has given out a total of 443 scholarships worth $316,500 in the past 16 years. The All Star Football Classic, which started in 1993, showcases El Paso County High School seniors who excel in both academics and their chosen extracurricular activities of football, cheerleading, drill team, choir, JROTC, band or sports medicine. It also offers students an opportunity and venues for scholarship; proclaim the pride of their youth, the spirit of competition and their quest for excellence.
