The Child Nutrition Services Department in the Socorro Independent School District has earned a six-cent increase in reimbursement for school meals as the result of a 100-percent score on a Texas Department of Agriculture review.
Americas High School orchestra student Joseph Nuñez and El Dorado High School band student Aaron Arteaga were selected for the 2013 Texas All-State Orchestra and All-State Band, respectively. Nuñez and Arteaga will perform at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) conference in February in San Antonio.

The SISD Foundation hosted its annual golf tournament Sept. 14 at the Vista Hills Country Club. More than 130 golfers played in the tournament, which is the biggest fund raiser for the District’s foundation for student scholarships.

Two El Dorado High School students displayed their talent and athleticism at the United States Track and Field Junior Olympics from July 23-29 at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore. Their outstanding performances earned them high rankings among the top track and field athletes in the nation.
Socorro High School celebrated an updated weight room for student athletes with a ribbon cutting ceremony on July 27. Coaches, student athletes, SISD administration, Board Trustees and special guests were invited to officially open the improved facility for students at Socorro High School.
The Board of Trustees for the Socorro Independent School District has named Dr. Joe Espinoza as the sole superintendent finalist for the District. The Board of Trustees announced its decision during a special board meeting on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012. Dr. Espinoza is from Houston ISD, where he has been a school improvement officer (area superintendent) since 2010.

Recognizing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and the success of the Breakfast in the Classroom program which was implemented at all Pre-K-5 and Pre-K-8 campuses last year, SISD will continue the breakfast program free of charge beginning on July 30, 2012.
Three Socorro ISD Trustees will visit Houston and Fort Worth school districts to learn more about the final two candidates continuing in the District’s search for a new superintendent. The Board anticipates naming a finalist candidate to serve as the SISD superintendent of schools in August 2012.
Donations are being accepted now for the annual School Uniform Swap sponsored by the El Paso County Lions Clubs. You may turn in clean, used uniforms for a credit slip for the Distribution Swap Day, which will be from 9 to 11 a.m. July 14 at Eastlake High School, 13000 Emerald Pass Ave. Or, you may also donate clean, used uniforms that your children have outgrown for other students to use.
More than 2,600 seniors graduated from five high schools in the Socorro Independent School District June 1 and 2 at the Don Haskins Center. The graduates participated in commencement ceremonies and were congratulated by SISD board members, superintendent, faculty and staff, family and friends. The Class of 2012 in SISD earned more than $28 million in grants and scholarships.
