Escontrias Elementary receives $1,000 grant   Print  E-mail

Every morning at Escontrias Elementary, seven 1st graders take the airwaves to inform and educate their fellow classmates.  With the help from KDBC Channel 4 and Crawford Auto Team, they’ll soon have new broadcast equipment to help them.

As the only 1st grade SWAT members, they spend their mornings learning about how to put on a newscast.  Tech pilot, Irasema Ramirez, guides the young group of anchors, reporters and photographers on their daily task of delivering information to lower valley school but she felt that something was missing from their newscast.

“We didn’t have a green screen or a mixer like the other campuses do and we couldn’t do the special effects they did,” says Ramirez. “All we had to work with is a camcorder.”

With the $1,000 grant from KDBC Channel 4 and Crawford Auto Team, she plans on updating equipment to help her students keep up with other schools. The grant was hand delivered to Escontrias on January 25 by KDBC anchor Jesse Blanco who was treated to a special newscast.  Anchors Paola Caballero and Divina Garcia began their special report with special guests from Crawford Auto Team and KDBC.  Backing them up were Angela Chavirra, Rheannon Nevarez, Carlos Rodriguez, Christian Gonzalez and Ashley Barron.
