| MECHS student earns Eagle Scout rank |
|
Mission Early College High School (MECHS) senior Fred Alexander Smalley was recognized for earning the rank of Eagle Scout during a special ceremony held at Jane A. Hambric School. Eagle Scout is the highest rank a Boy Scout can obtain. He is the tenth Scout to earn the rank under Troop 37 Scoutmaster and Jane A. Hambric School Assistant Principal Jesus Beltran. According to the Boy Scouts of America, only five percent of all Boy Scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Recognizing the distinct honor Smalley earned, many special guests attended and participated in the special ceremony held to acknowledge his accomplishment. “Scouting has really allowed me to do a lot of outdoor activities which I love and it has also given me the opportunity to be a leader as well as a teacher to younger scouts,” Smalley said about his time as a Scout. “I really like all the technical skills I have learned…I look forward to helping other Scouts reach their goals.” Dr. Richard M. Rhodes, President of El Paso Community College (EPCC), served as the guest of honor and keynote speaker. Dr. Rhodes is himself an Eagle Scout. His father and son are also Eagle Scouts. In addition to his ties to the Boy Scouts of America, Dr. Rhodes attended because Fred is an EPCC student. Through MECHS, Fred has been able to work towards a distinguished high school diploma while simultaneously earning an associate’s degree from the college. Master Sergeant Richard Brown from the Ft. Bliss Sergeant Major’s Academy and leaders from The El Paso Chapter of The Military Order of the World Wars, the Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow and Juarez, Mexico’s Boy Scout Council also attended the ceremony and presented Smalley with special gifts and recognitions. “This is the most special occasion for a Boy Scout,” said Beltran. “Their hard work and the countless hours put in to their service projects are recognized through this honor few have attained.” Beltran, who became an Eagle Scout in 1971, has proudly run the Troop for 30 years. His father ran the same troop 40 years ago. Troop 37 has invested hundreds of community service hours throughout the El Paso community. |
