New certification rules issued by the State Board for Educator Certification now require Texas educators to renew their teaching certificate every 5 years. Educators who are issued Standard Certificates after September 1, 1999 must satisfy the following criteria:
150 clock hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) for teachers within the 5 year period
200 clock hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) for counselors, administrators, diagnosticians and librarians.
Hold a valid Standard Certificate that has not been, nor is in the process of being sanctioned by SBEC
Successfully complete a criminal history review
Not be in default on a student loan or in arrears of child support
Pay a renewal fee to be determined by SBEC
It is recommended that teachers satisfy at least 30 clock hours per year, while other educators complete at least 40 clock hours per year. Educators who are attending classes at an accredited institution of higher learning may earn 15 clock hours for every semester credit hour earned. For the average three semester course, an educator will earn 45 clock hours of CPE.
