The Socorro Independent School District’s top two teachers of the year were named at the 2012 Teacher of the Year Gala May 4 at the El Paso Performing Arts and Convention Center. Monika Seelig Ruiz from Loma Verde Elementary is the 2012 SISD Elementary Teacher of the Year and Greta June Brasgalla from El Dorado 9th Grade Academy is the 2012 Secondary Teacher of the Year.
About 950 people attended the annual banquet where all 42 campus teachers of the year were honored. The Elite 8 teachers also were recognized with a video tribute and the top two teachers were surprised with the announcement at the end of the awards program.
SISD’s superintendent Xavier De La Torre and board president Michael Najera spoke during the program to offer congratulations to all of the teachers of the year. Socorro High School teacher Troy Herbort was the master of ceremonies for the event.
Seelig Ruiz and Brasgalla will represent SISD at the regional teacher of the year contest and awards program in August.
