“Our student athletes and student body want to show appreciation and thanks to Dr. Serrano, our administrative team, Mr. Pat O’Neill and our school board,” said head football coach and athletic coordinator Roy Garcia. “They had the foresight to get together to improve our facilities, to improve the self-image of our student body here at Socorro and to give us opportunity to continue doing things successfully.”
The weight room was updated with refurbished equipment and a new paint job. About 1,500 students will use the weight room throughout the school year for athletics training and in weight-conditioning classes.
Interim superintendent Pat O’Neill and Socorro High School principal Dr. Miguel Serrano gave greetings at the ribbon cutting ceremony. O’Neill acknowledged the SISD Board of Trustees for their commitment to providing high-quality resources for all students.
“We’re fortunate to have a school board that believes in equity and in creating world-class facilities,” said interim superintendent Pat O’Neill. “Socorro High School has set a high standard for academics and now we’re raising the bar for athletics.”
He also mentioned more upgrades that are currently being done or will be completed in the near future at Socorro High School, including a new turf on the football field, new bleachers in The Pit, a new speaker system in the gym, new furniture and new science labs, which will be constructed as part of Bond 2011.
Dr. Serrano expressed his appreciation for the work done to improve the school. "We’re going to have an excellent year, not just academically but athletically as well,” he said.
