Dear Sun Ridge Community:
Students will be STAAR testing again this week. On Tuesday, 6th and 7thgraders will take their math test, and 8th graders will take the social studies test. On Wednesday, 6th and 7th graders take reading, and 8th graders take science. That will be it for this year, with the exception of the few 8th grade students who need to retake either the math or reading test to go to 9th grade.
We received the results for 8thgrade math and reading last week, and are in the process of getting results to students. In addition, we’re planning an intensive two week “camp” during the school day to prep the students for the retest, which will be on May 13 and 14. Most of the students were very close to passing, and we believe that with just a little more help, they will not only pass the test, but will be ready for high school algebra.
The 2013 Texas Legislature passed House Bill 5 (HB 5). The purpose of this bill is to ensure that Texas graduates are college and career ready. Graduation requirements were changed, beginning with students entering high school in the fall of 2014. All students will complete the “foundation” requirements, and will choose an “endorsement.” In SISD, students may choose from five different endorsements: Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM); Arts & Humanities; Public Services; Business & Industry; and Multidisciplinary.
SISD has a wealth of information on its web site, at www.sisd.net/HB5 We encourage all parents to view this information so that you are aware of the changes.
In addition, the El Dorado HS feeder pattern will be hosting a meeting for all eighth grade parents at El Dorado HighSchool on April 29 at 6 p.m. This is an extremely important meeting, where parents will be asked to sign their child’s individual endorsement choice and course plan for high school. This is a requirement for all entering freshmen, and students will not be allowed to register at the high school without this form.
Thank you, and as always, please call us with your questions or concerns…although we love to hear compliments, too. I can be reached at email@example.com or 915-937-6600.
