April 14, 2014
Dear Sun Ridge Community:
The 2013 Texas Legislature passed House Bill 5 (HB 5). The purpose of this bill is to ensure that Texas graduates are college and career ready. Graduation requirements were changed, beginning with students entering high school in the fall of 2014. All students will complete the “foundation” requirements, and will choose an “endorsement.” In SISD, students may choose from five different endorsements: Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM); Arts & Humanities; Public Services; Business & Industry; and Multidisciplinary.
SISD has a wealth of information on its web site, at www.sisd.net/HB5 We encourage all parents to view this information so that you are aware of the changes.
In addition, the El Dorado HS feeder pattern will be hosting a meeting for all eighth grade parents at El Dorado High School on April 29 at 6 p.m. This is an extremely important meeting, where parents will be asked to sign their child’s individual endorsement choice and course plan for high school. This is a requirement for all entering freshmen, and students will not be allowed to register at the high school without this form.
On April 4, eighth grade students also heard about two new exciting magnet programs in SISD. Students may apply to attend Synergi (at Montwood HS), which is a project-based learning curriculum focused around math and science, or SATA (at Eastlake HS), which is a computer science program where students can graduate with computer certifications in addition to a high school diploma. Visit the web site for each school, or contact the Sun Ridge counselors, for more information.
On April 15 (moved from April 10), parents and students are invited to our fourth and final content “fun night,” this time for social studies. The department is planning many fun activities that students and their parents can enjoy together. The social studies night begins at 6 p.m., and there will be an opportunity to informally speak with the principal at 5 p.m.
Thank you, and as always, please call us with your questions or concerns…although we love to hear compliments, too. I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or 915-937-6600.
