Defense Gives Pebble Hills Edge in Basketball

Pebble Hills defeats Coronado 58-39 in a boys basketball game

    Bret Bloomquist/El Paso Times

Even when their shots weren't dropping and offense was a struggle, the Pebble Hills boys basketball game was in good shape in a big District 1-6A showdown against Coronado because their interior defense was so solid.

Then, early in the third quarter, the Spartans knuckled down, went to work and fixed their offense in the two most likely ways. First they attacked the boards and got second chance points, then they used their defense on the perimeter to create havoc and easy transition baskets.

That all conspired to turn a 36-33 Pebble Hills lead late in the third quarter into a 58-39 runaway that put the Spartans in second place in 1-6A.

“Toughness” – Jay Bilas – ESPN

I have heard the word "toughness" thrown around a lot lately. Reporters on television,
radio and in print have opined about a team or player's "toughness" or quoted a coach
talking about his team having to be "tougher" to win.
