2018 SISD Distinguished Library Administrator Award Winners
Ms Hansen, Horizon Heights ES
Ms. Hansen offers book talks and promotes reading every day over the announcements. She provides opportunities for the librarian to collaborate with leadership, teachers, and other librarians to ensure library activities integrate technology, are aligned to TEKS, and accessible to everyone. Students at Horizon Heights know that "readers become leaders" and they continue to practice reading, even in the summer, as evidenced by the dedicated participation in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge where they placed #10 in the Nation! Her efforts to do “whatever it takes” to inspire students to read has landed her duct-taped to the wall and slimed on the playground!
Mr. Herrera, William Slider MS
Mr. Herrera models a culture of reading for students by supporting various reading clubs and challenges hosted in the library. He worked with his librarian to evaluate library data and identify areas of need to help engage all types of readers. As a result, high-interest age-appropriate books were added to the library, the physical space was updated to a more modern and collaborative environment, and library resources were expanded into the #LibraryintheSun, a mobile library available in the outdoor courtyard. He also provides opportunities for professional growth and fellowship with a Staff Book Club and by sharing links to relevant educational research and best practices specifically targeted at reading and writing across contents.
