Why is pre-k important?
Pre-k is very important to a child’s development and school readiness. Your child will have early language, literacy, and math experiences to better prepare them in later grades. Attending pre-k also helps young students gain a sense of self, exploration, discovery, and confidence. Socorro ISD’s program offers a safe environment, high-quality integrated curriculum, highly qualified teachers, and ongoing assessments with progress monitoring.

How old does my child have to be to enroll in an early childhood program?
Your child must meet to following age qualifiers based on the Texas Education Agency requirements:
- Must be 3 years old by September 1, 2023 for the half day 3-Year-Old Pre-K Program; or
- Must be 4 years old by September 1, 2023 for the full day 4-Year-Old Pre-K Program; or
- Must be 5 years old by September 1, 2023 for Kindergarten.

Does my child have to qualify to enroll in the 4-Year-Old Pre-K Program?
If your child is 4 years old by September 1, 2023, they qualify for free full-day Pre-K at all SISD campuses (except for Ernesto Serna). Classroom spots will be first come, first served, as there is limited room.

Does my child have to qualify to enroll in the 3-Year-Old Program?
3-year-old children must meet at least one of the following Texas Education Agency requirements to qualify for the free half-day program:
- is unable to speak and understand English; or
- a student who receives free or reduced priced lunch; or
- is homeless, defined by 42 U.S.C. Section 1143a, regardless of the residence of the child, of either parent of the child, or of the child's guardian or other person having lawful control of the child; or
- is the child of an active duty member of the armed forces of the United States, including state military forces or reserves; or
- is the child of a member of the armed forces of the United States, including state military or a reserves, who was injured or killed while serving on active duty; or
- is or ever has been in foster care provided by Section 262.201, Family Code; or
- is the child of a person eligible for the Star of Texas Award as: a peace officer under Section 3106.002, Government Code; a firefighter under Section 3106.003, Government Code; or an emergency medical first responder under Section 3106.004, Government Code.

Will transportation be provided?
For the 3-Year-Old Program, transportation will not be provided.
For the 4-Year-Old Pre-K Program, transportation will be provided if you live within district boundaries and qualify as defined by our Transportation department.

Will my child need school supplies?
Parents should check their campus website throughout the summer for school supply lists.

What resources are available if I believe my child needs Special Education services?
If you believe your child may need these services, you may contact the principal at your school location or our Special Education Department.
