    Student Dress Code & Code of Conduct

    2022-2023

     

    Socorro ISD shall comply with State and City orders and guidance for return to school, to include Social Distancing and other Public Health Interventions, set forth by the City of El Paso Department of Public Health (DPH) Local Health Authority during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.

     

    SISD Disregard for Authority:

    For student safety, students shall not:

    • Fail to comply with directives given by school personnel (insubordination).
    • Leave school grounds or school-sponsored events without permission.
    • Disobey rules for conduct in district vehicles.
    • Refuse to accept discipline management techniques assigned by a teacher or principal.
    • Disregard Social Distancing and Other Public Health Interventions (i.e face mask requirements) set forth by SISD.
      • Consequences for failing to comply will lead to disciplinary actions

     

    For scholar’s safety during COVID public health emergency we are asking that you follow the protocols below for drop off and pick up:

    • Drop off time will begin at 7:30am
    • Students will report directly to their 1st class by their assigned entrance.
    • In extreme cases students dropped off earlier than 7:15 must be dropped off at the gym entrance.
    • Scholars will be released by their last period teacher using wellness protocol systems.
    • All scholars who walk will be released first and MUST leave school premises immediately. Loitering will not be allowed.
    • Scholars being picked up will be in the drop off area in designated spots following social distancing guidelines.
    • Any scholar not picked up by 4:00 pm will be escorted to the gym for tutoring. Parents will need to pick up their scholars at the gym entrance.

     

    In School Dress Code

    Online Dress Code- Highly encouraged but not required

    • Please contact campus CIS, Mrs. Clark regarding uniform assistance.

     

    1. SHIRTS: 4 COLOR CHOICES- TEAL, BURNT ORANGE, BLACK, WHIITE
    • Polo style collared shirt (either with or without school logo)
    • No designer logos on uniform shirts. Puentes club shirts can be worn with school pants daily.
    • Shirts should fit comfortably, not be tight, excessively loose and be at least two inches but no more than four inches past waist.
    • During cold weather solid school color long sleeve shirts may be worn underneath
    • Jackets with a ZIPPER can be worn but MUST be completely UNZIPPED throughout the instructional day.
    • Only a Puentes Bobcat Hoodie may be worn throughout the instructional day. The hood may NOT be worn at any time in the building.

     

    1. BOTTOMS: KHAKI/BLACK
    • Uniform pants, shorts, or skorts. NO SKIRTS. (The length must be longer than your fingertips when placed at side of leg)
    • Skorts must have the front panel sewn to the shorts.
    • Capri pants may be worn if they are the uniform-style capris
    • All pants, shorts, and skorts must be worn at the waist/cargo allowed
    • No corduroy pants, excessively tight, low rise, or overly baggy/saggy pants, shorts
    • LEGGINGS CAN BE WORN ONLY UNDER SHORTS AND THEY HAVE TO BE SOLID BLACK OR WHITE WITH NO LOGOS

     

    1. BUILDING AND ONLINE P.E. UNIFORM
    • Shorts cannot be excessively tight or short. (The length must be longer than your fingertips when placed at side of leg; Basketball shorts are recommended)
    • No yoga pants or leggings can be worn without shorts
    • No see-through blouses can be worn

     

    1. BUILDING CONSEQUENCES
    • If a student is found to be out of dress code, the student will be given the opportunity to call a parent to bring them a change of clothes.
    • If a student is unable to change or reach a parent to bring them something, then he or she will be sent to SAC (Special Assignment Class) for the remainder of the school day.

                                                          

    1. SCHOOL SPIRIT DAY
    • Optional Friday Uniform: Students may purchase the 2020-2021 Bobcat Spirit T-shirt to wear with blue jeans (no rips or holes are allowed) on Fridays.  These will be on sale on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunches all school year. 
    • All jeans MUST meet the dress code criteria. -No holes, rips, tears, baggy, saggy, frayed jeans allowed.

     

    *On occasions, per administration - uniform allowances will be made.

    (For example-picture day)

     

    1. NOT ALLOWED:
    • No flip/flops or house slippers, or Crocs of any kind. No heels on any shoes/boots larger than 1 inch.
    • Back packs may be carried. All backpacks must be of normal student size. No inappropriate writing is allowed on backpacks. No rolling or luggage style backpacks allowed, unless approved by admin.
    • Hair should be trimmed/groomed in a way so that teachers can see the students’ eyes in class.
    • No Mohawk cuts or look alike Mohawk style cuts/unusual style haircuts that will disrupt the educational process are allowed.
    • ****No shaved designs or multiple lines, other than one line on the top of the head, that designates a part in the hair is allowed
    • No unnatural colored hair streaks
    • Unnatural hair colors, including unnaturally colored hair extensions (blue, bright red, pink, purple, etc.) are not allowed.
    • No Bandanas (Only headbands can be worn)
    • NO GANG SIGNS are allowed at any time
    • Make-up such as cat eyes, brown or black lipstick or excessive eyeliner or eye shadow (beyond the edge of the eye) Not Allowed. NO shaved or shaved cuts in eyebrows.
    • No body piercing other than the ear. All earrings (no more than 2 per ear) must be stud style only and no more than ¼ inch in diameter. No ear gauges.
    • Writing on hands, arms, clothing backpacks or other visible body parts is not allowed.
    • NO caps/hats/sunglasses are allowed to be worn in the building.
    • All jacket/sweatshirt/sweater style outerwear must have a zipper/buttons and remain unzipped/unbuttoned while worn in the building. NO pullover style jackets/hoodies can be worn except for a Puentes Bobcat Hoodie. The hood may not be worn at any time in the building.
    • Contact lenses must be deemed appropriate by administration. Cat eyes, snake eyes, etc. are not permissible.
    • Stud or spike-like bracelets, necklaces, large thick chains, belts, wallet chains are not allowed. Any beaded type of necklace must be worn inside the shirt.
    • Students are not allowed to chew gum in building.
    • No permanent markers, sharpies, or liquid paper allowed.
    • Any clothing or item that is deemed as distracting and interrupts the learning process by the administration will not be allowed.

     

    1. OUTSIDE FOOD or DELIVERIES
    • No birthday food celebrations during the instructional school day.
    • No outside vendor lunch deliveries will be allowed (Ex. Fast Food/Restaurant Meal, etc.)
    • Student deliveries of any type will NOT be accepted (Ex. Flowers, Balloons, Stuffed Animals, etc.)

     

     

    1. USE OF TECHNOLOGY DEVICES TO INCLUDE CELL PHONES:
    • Cell phones must be TURNED OFF from 8:30 – 3:30 & during afterschool tutoring (unless educators have allowed for instructional purposes)
    • Any cell phone out and visible during the school day including lunch time will be confiscated and MUST BE picked up at school BY A PARENT, regardless of how or if the student is using the phone. Students may use front office or classroom phone to reach a parent at any time.
    • There is a $15.00 retrieval fee as per SISD Board Policy on the second offense and any offense thereafter. Phones will be available for pick up from 7:30 am – 8:30 am and 3:30pm – 4:00pm only. During COVID, phone pick-up must be by appointment, please call 937-9201.

     

     

    *SSG Manuel R. Puentes Middle School WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEFT OF ELECTRONIC ITEMS SUCH CELL PHONES, MP3’S, IPOD’S, AIR PODS, EARPHONES, LAPTOPS or any other electronic devices.

     

    *THESE ARE HIGH THEFT ITEMS AND ARE BROUGHT ONTO SCHOOL GROUNDS AT THE OWNERS OWN RISK.

     

    *Instructional time will not be spent by teachers or administration investigating the loss or recovery of these items.

     

    *Students must pick up all confiscated items in a timely manner.  At the end of each 3-week period all items will be donated to a local charity.  It is the student’s responsibility to collect any confiscated items within the week it was confiscated.

     

    *ON STATE TESTING DAYS NO CELL PHONES or SMART WATCHES ALLOWED

     

    1. Selling of Items by Scholars:
    • No student is allowed to sell any item for personal gain. The only items allowed to be sold are campus or district approved fundraisers.
    •  
    1. Tardy Policy:
    • If a scholar reports to school after 8:30 a.m. they are considered tardy. After 3 tardies the scholar will have a consequence, which may include lunch detention in SAC the whole lunch period.
    • If a scholar has 5 or more tardies to any one period, the educator WILL write a referral.

     

     

    Additional Online Code of Conduct amendments to ensure a successful learning environment:

    1. Use of Technology Devices to Include Cell Phones:
    • Cell phones must be TURNED OFF during online instruction (unless educators have allowed for instructional purposes).
    • Texting or playing games will not be allowed during instruction.
    • Televisions are to be turned off.
    • Technology must be used for instructional purposes only.
    • Technology will not be used to infringe on other scholar’s learning.

     

    1. Tardy Policy:
    • If a scholar logs on 5 minutes after the scheduled class, they will be considered tardy.
    • If a scholar has 5 or more tardies to any one period, the educator WILL write a referral.
    • Restroom breaks – When a scholar needs to use the restroom, they will not interrupt instruction, however, scholar must notify educator for permission through set norms.

    Any parent having an item of concern regarding the student dress code or code of conduct will need to address the School Improvement Team Committee.  The committee is made up of parents, faculty/staff, administration and community representation.  An appointment may be scheduled by contacting the school secretary and submitting your concerns in writing to be added to the agenda.

    SISD DISTRICT WIDE INFORMATION
     
     

    It is the philosophy of the Socorro Independent School District and SSG Manuel R. Puentes Middle School, that students should maintain high standards of dress, grooming, and appearance. SISD has established the following universal uniform options to compliment the other agreed upon school uniform options:

    o   Khaki pants and a white polo shirt without a school logo;

    o   School uniform pants and a school colored polo shirt without a school logo.

    o   Physical education uniform bottoms (shorts or sweatpants in any color) and a white, gray, or school colored t-shirt without a school logo.

    As per Policy FNCA (Local), a universal uniform may be worn at any SISD school that has elected to implement a school uniform policy.

    No representative or official of a respective school shall limit, dictate, and/or attempt to coerce from whom or where the required uniform must be purchased.
