The Socorro Independent School District has expanded its supper meal program to include the Desert Wind School community. The school started serving free supper meals on March 4.

The program provides children ages 1-18 a free after school meal. Since its inception in 2017, SISD has served more than 97,890 free nutritious suppers to children in the community.

“We are so excited to launch the supper program at Desert Wind,” said Shelley Chenausky, SISD Director of Child Nutrition Services. “To be able to provide this service to our Desert Wind community is a great opportunity.”

The supper meal program will be offered from 3:15 to 4:45p.m. Monday–Thursday in the Desert Wind cafeteria. Receiving the free meal is as easy as signing in and dining in. Carry-out meals are not allowed due to program regulations. Parents may use the Meal Viewer app to view menus and get the nutritional values of specific food items. The Meal Viewer app can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play.

Other SISD schools that offer free supper are Mission Ridge Elementary School, Bill Sybert and Ernesto Serna K-8 schools, Capt. Walter E. Clarke Middle School and Eastlake and Socorro High Schools.

Currently, 71.4 percent of SISD students participate in either free- or reduced-price lunch programs. All high school students qualify for free universal breakfast, and elementary and middle school students receive free breakfast in the classroom. In addition, SISD provides free lunch meals at 12 campuses who are part of the Community Eligibility Program (CEP), and a free after-school snack for WIN Academy students at 13 schools.

The free supper program is part of the Child and Adult Care Food Program and administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
