SISD welcomes new Pre-K, kinder students on registration day
The Socorro Independent School District had a pre-kindergarten and new kindergarten student registration day for the 2019-2020 school year on April 6 at elementary schools across the district.
More than 1,500 Pre-K students, some 200 more than last year, and 357 new kindergartners registered on that day. Currently, there are 2,053 students in SISD’s pre-k program.
“We have increased ever since we started the registration day three years ago,” said Lupe Lujan, coordinator of administrative services. “I am not surprised. We offer the best education and endless opportunities. SISD is a destination district.”
Free Pre-K is offered to students who turn four years old by Sept. 1, 2019 and live within the district boundaries. Parents of children who turn five years old by Sept. 1, 2019 and live within the district boundaries can register for kindergarten in SISD schools.
“We had a good day,” said Leslie Thomas, principal of SISD’s new Cactus Trails Elementary, which opens its doors July 29. “Giving 100 packets just this morning is a testimony to that. SISD is the place to be.”
Team SISD offers free half-day Pre-K to all students who live in the district, even if they don’t meet the state requirements. SISD also offers free full-day Pre-K based on a first-come, first-served basis. The full-day program is free for those who qualify based on economic, language, homeless or military (active) requirements as established by the state.
Families who do not qualify for free Pre-K but would like to enroll in full-day are entitled to a free half-day and tuition-based for the other half. The tuition is $181.68 per month for a 10-month school year.
SISD is the reason Felix Holguin and his family moved to the area five years ago. He registered his daughter for the Pre-K program at Cactus Trails.
“This district’s schools are awesome,” he said. “They are the best. The enrichment programs they have for kids is top notch. They offer the most options. That is really important. That is not something I had growing up. We are excited for the options available to our daughter.”
One of the latest opportunities is SISD’s new Dual Language Academy. The academy will be available for new students in kindergarten and first grade for the 2019-2020 school year at Dr. Sue A. Shook and Myrtle Cooper elementary schools.
Lazaro Sanchez signed up his daughter, Emily, for the dual language program at Dr. Sue A. Shook. He was pleasantly surprised that the district offers the program.
“This will be good for her to be bilingual,” Sanchez said. “Most of her family speaks Spanish and this will help for her future.”
Valeria Vargas was excited to register her four-year-old Liam for Pre-K at Cactus Trails. She can’t wait to see all that the school will offer, including new technology.
“I am happy my son gets to learn in a different environment than we learned. He will be better prepared,” Vargas said.
Registration for Pre-K students is still available at designated Pre-K hubs and elementary campuses that serve Pre-K. New kindergarten registration also is available at the designated home campuses.
