Educators seek to join SISD WIN Academy at teacher job fair
The Socorro Independent School District organized a job fair for highly qualified instructors seeking to join the innovative WIN Academy at the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
The WIN Academy provides students who struggle in a traditional education setting more learning time via nine-hour school days Monday-Thursday, a double dose of reading and math, digital devices and curriculum, and personalized learning with a teacher who loops with them for three years.
Applicants were excited to learn about the WIN Academy and had one-on-one interviews with principals at the job fair.
“This is a very different way to organize a job fair but I like it because it’s more personal,” said John Tullius, an applicant. “I’ve heard great things about this academy, and believe I fit the mold of a WIN teacher. I want to inspire students to get out of their comfort zone, work hard to better themselves, and help them succeed.”
Like Tullius, many educators attended the job fair in hopes of exceling in their career.
“Being a WIN teacher is very gratifying,” said Angelica Herrera, SISD director of human resources for elementary staffing. “These educators get great incentives but most importantly, they get to see their students flourish academically while gaining confidence and skill.”
WIN students and teachers pledge to: Work hard, have an “I can do it” attitude, and Never give up. They are held to high accountability standards with punctuality, attendance, preparation, work ethic, and effort. Teachers help students reach their full potential by providing them with rigorous, meaningful learning opportunities.
“Being a WIN teacher is rewarding because we build trusting relationships with our students and get to see them grow academically, socially and emotionally,” said Erica Saldaña, a WIN teacher at Purple Heart Elementary. “I also have grown a lot since I became a WIN teacher because of the professional development. The technology we use also is very useful for instructional purposes.”
WIN teachers must have a minimum of three years teaching experience, hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, a valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for subject and level assigned, and highly qualified in the appointed subject area(s).
