Team SISD earns the 2019 Cigna Well-Being Award
The Socorro Independent School District has received the 2019 Cigna Honorable Culture of Well-Being Award in a Public Sector.
Representatives from Cigna presented the award to the SISD Board of Trustees, Superintendent Jose Espinoza, Ed.D., and members of the Human Resources department at the Aug. 20 board meeting at the District Service Center.
“I feel that this is the result of Socorro ISD’s commitment to employees’ well-being,” said Mario Carmona, director of employee benefits in the SISD Human Resources department.
Cigna is a worldwide health service organization whose mission is to help individuals improve their health, well-being and peace of mind and provides health insurance coverage for eligible SISD employees.
“This is a huge achievement for Socorro,” said Cigna Health Promotion Manager Meredith Means. “We’ve been working on creating an environment of health culture for employees and their families together for a few years now.”
The Cigna Honorable Culture of Well-Being Award is given to those organizations who demonstrate a strong commitment to improving health and wellness through workplace wellness programs. The award is a testament to the leaders of SISD, who’ve worked to make everyone healthier physically and emotionally, and that shows they are making their employees a priority, Means said.
“The employees work really hard to take care of the students and community, but we work to help those employees to put themselves first by having on-site representatives,” she said. “All this is a reinforcement of SISD’s commitment to the overall health and well-being of their employees.”
Cigna has recognized the time, money and resources that SISD has contributed on well-being initiatives for their employees, through the efforts of the HR team, benefits committee, and the robust communications program, along with Fruit Friday events and on-site health education seminars, and through implementing programs like Omada, which helps employees take action to prevent diabetes.
“The HR Team will continue to promote wellness in an effort to motivate employees to learn how health risks can be reduced, apply healthy changes and improve personal health,” Carmona said. “SISD staff and dependents are taking an active role, utilizing available resources and becoming engaged in their own health.”
The school district consistently focuses on student and employee health, fitness, and wellness through its Healthier Team SISD initiative, which involves the collaboration of its Human Resources department, Child Nutrition Services department, athletics department, Health Services department, and school counselors.
With the Healthier Team SISD program, the district addresses food nutrition, health instruction and education, safe and healthy school environments, health services, physical education, school counseling, health promotion for staff, and integrated school and community programs.
