District promotes a Healthier Team SISD through employee health fair
Socorro Independent School District organized its 2019 Employee Health Fair to connect students, employees and community members with nutrition, fitness, and wellness resources.
The annual event is part of the district’s commitment to create a Healthier Team SISD, said SISD Director of Employee Benefits Mario Carmona.
“The health fair is one of many efforts SISD uses to promote health and wellness,” Carmona said. “We had a great turnout this year. More than 400 employees and their families received free quality services and information that will help them be proactive and mindful of their health.”
Services rendered at the annual fair included blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings and hearing and vision exams. Participants also learned about the new SISD employee clinic, and met its manager, pharmacist and physician.
The event was a convenient way for employees to learn about the resources and agencies that are available to them and everyone in the community.
“This was my first time at the SISD health fair,” said Karla Lopez, Communities in School coordinator at John Drugan School. “A big part of my job is to connect families with resources, but I found that this event was also beneficial for myself.”
The health fair had many perks. Participants were able to get immunizations, and took advantage of the free Zumba classes, cooking demonstrations, massages, door prizes, and fire truck tours.
Some lucky employees took home great rewards, including Jessica Camacho, a kindergarten teacher at Cactus Trails Elementary School, who won the perfect prize of bikes for her family of four.
“It’s really neat that SISD offers its employees these kinds of opportunities,” said Jessica Camacho, a kindergarten teacher at Cactus Trails Elementary School. “My intention was to come and get flu shots and I ended up leaving with not just the flu shots but a family four pack of bikes. We have four members in our family, and we have been using our bikes ever since.”
