SISD student-athletes commit to colleges, universities on National Signing Day

Socorro Independent School District had 17 student-athletes pledge to pursue their athletic endeavors at the university and college level on National Signing Day. The students signed their letters of intent to continue to play football, soccer and cross-country at their prospective universities.

Pebble Hills High School

Isaiah Davis, a football wide receiver, signed with the University of Texas at San Antonio where he plans to study kinesiology. Davis has made 1st Team All-District, Second Team All-City and Senior All-Star.

Davis, and his twin brother Elijah, will be playing alongside their older brother, Kevin Davis, at UTSA.

“This means the world to me because it has always been a dream for us to play at the same college,” Davis said. “For us to be able to do that as a team and as a family is great.”

Elijah Davis, a football defensive back, also signed with the University of Texas at San Antonio. Davis has made 1st Team All-District, First Team All-City and and was named the Greater El Paso Football Showcase Senior All-Star.

“It’s going to be fun having the opportunity to play with my older brother,” Davis said.

Sebastian Ochoa, a football quarterback, signed with Western New Mexico University, where he plans to study criminal justice to become a lawyer. He is a two-time 1st Team All-District winner, has made 2nd Team All-City and has been named the Greater El Paso Football Showcase Senior All-Star.

“I’m always up for challenges so being there and competing for my spot is going to be fun,” Ochoa said.

El Dorado High School

DeAnna Tarango, a center back on the girls’ soccer team, signed with Our Lady of the Lake University, where she plans to study digital media and video game design. Tarango is the team captain and a four-year varsity player. She made 2018 1st Team All-District 1-6A and 2019 1st Team All-District 2-5A. 

“My coaches had confidence in me when I didn’t even have confidence in myself and they showed me what I was capable of accomplishing,” Tarango said.

Stephanie Valles, a center mid-fielder on the girls’ soccer team, signed with Our Lady of the Lake University. Valles is a 3-year team captain who has made 2018 1st Team All-District 1-6A, 2019 1st Team All-District 2-5A and 2019 1st Team All-City.

Anthony Rivera, an inside linebacker for the football team, signed with Southern Nazarene University. Rivera is a three-year varsity player who made 2018 2nd Team All-District 1-5A Linebacker and 2019 1st Team All-District 1-5A Linebacker.

Dare Olowe, a cornerback and wide receiver for the football team, signed with University of New England in Biddeford where he plans to study business. The three-year varsity player made the 2018 2nd Team All-District 2-5A.

“I’ve seen guys older than me signing and you get this feeling inside of you telling you that that’s where you want to be one day and to actually be here is amazing and feels surreal,” Olowe said.

Americas High School

Jesus Rodriguez, a football tight end, signed with Missouri Valley College where he plans to study criminal justice. He is a three-year varsity player.

“Today feels really good because I’ve always dreamed of playing at the next level,” Rodriguez said. “It feels great knowing that I’m going to be playing the sport I love and at the same time gain my education.”

Kalum Anchondo, a football offensive line, signed with Oklahoma Panhandle State University. He has been named to 1st Team All-District and as an El Paso All-Star.

Mike Nowell, a football quarterback, signed with Oklahoma Panhandle State University. He was named Offensive Newcomer of the Year and El Paso All-Star.

Nathan Alvarado, a football free safety, signed with Oklahoma Panhandle State University. He has made 2nd Team All-District and El Paso All-Star.

Nik Kim, a football center, signed with Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Kim made 1st Team All-District and El Paso All-Star.

Peter Velarde, a football linebacker, signed with Western New Mexico University. Velarde has made 1st Team All-District and El Paso All-Star.

“Getting here took a lot of hard work and dedication putting everything I have out on the field,” Velarde said. “My teachers and coaches here helped me by always pushing me to be the best.”

Ryan Acosta, a football wide receiver, signed with Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Acosta has made 1st Team All-District and All-City El Paso All-Star.

Sebastian Guzman, a football defensive end, signed with Wayland Baptist University. Guzman placed 10th in the state in sacks.

Montwood High School

Chris Ramos, a football running back, signed with New Mexico State University where he plans to study physical therapy.

He was a unanimous pick for 1-6A Offensive Player of the Year and 1st Team Running Back. He was on the Academic All-District Team, a 1st Team All-City Selection, and won Skills MVP Honors in the Greater El Paso Senior All-Star Classic.

“My coaches have always pushed me to be the best I can be, not only on the field but in the classroom,” Ramos said. “They have always expected the best from me, and I feel like that alone has just pushed me to this point.”

Devyn Sauls, a football offensive lineman, signed with East Central University where he plans to study mass communications and wants to become an ESPN analyst. Sauls was 2nd Team All-District Selection.

He has played several positions for the Rams including center, guard and right tackle.

“I feel blessed to be able to play at the next level,” Sauls said. “It has always been a dream of mine.”
