SISD Fine Arts receives national music award for 6th year in a row
The Socorro Independent School District has earned the Best Communities for Music Education Award from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for the sixth consecutive year.
The prestigious NAMM award goes to school districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to ensure all students receive a well-rounded education.
SISD Fine Arts Director Armando Martinez said being named a 2022 Best Communities for Music Education award recipient is a humbling experience showcases the tireless efforts of the district’s music educators and the overall commitment to provide enriching fine arts opportunities for all students.
“This award is a reflection of all the hard work and dedication of our teachers,” Martinez said. “Team SISD is committed to music education and promoting student achievement through the arts."
SISD is among the five percent of school districts in the nation to earn the recognition. To qualify for the Best Communities for Music Education Award, SISD answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
SISD students can take numerous music courses and participate in award-winning music programs including band, mariachi, guitar, piano, orchestra, fiddle, and choir. The district also offers formal music instruction in general and IB music, music appreciation, music history and music theory.
For the 2021-2022 school year, all elementary students are enrolled in a music course, 66 percent of middle school students are taking a music class, a 10 percent increase from the last school year, and 24 percent of high school students are enrolled in a musical program.
Martinez said a notable achievement was that throughout remote instruction SISD teachers ensured students still had access to the various music programs in the district.
“Their hard work and perseverance is evident in their most recent accolades and the high levels of student achievement,” he said. “This a direct reflection of our teachers’ commitment to ensuring student success even coming out of a pandemic year.”
As part of its commitment to a high-quality, comprehensive, and rigorous education, SISD continues to refine and expand its programs to provide students the best opportunities to achieve their full potential in the fine arts.
For the 2022-2023 school year, SISD will launch a new, innovative elementary fine arts academy for students to receive specialized instruction in the arts, along with their traditional core instruction. The Paso Del Norte Fine Arts Academy will be a first-of-its-kind academy in El Paso and will allow students to receive a wealth of experience in music education, visual arts, theater, dance and more.
This Best Communities for Music Education program is in its 23rd year of honoring schools and districts across the country, who offer opportunities to increase awareness and support for music programs.
The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit organization supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its approximately 10,400 members around the world.
