El Dorado celebrates newly resurfaced playing field with ribbon cutting
El Dorado High School celebrated the school’s newly resurfaced athletic field with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 10 at the school.
The ceremony included El Dorado High School students, coaches, teachers, administrators, the SISD superintendent, board trustees and district administration.
“Our athletes have long awaited this moment and I am so excited for today,” said Venessa Betancourt, El Dorado High School principal.
The celebration included a first throw and first kick by athletes and district leaders to launch the use of the new field. The renewed turf with give athletes a fresh, safe playing field to practice and compete.
“We are happy to be at El Dorado High School celebrating this new turf for football, soccer and all other athletes to enjoy,” said SISD Superintendent Nate Carman Ed.D. “This new turf and this celebration mark a great new beginning filled with endless opportunities for tremendous success at the Empire.”
El Dorado cheerleaders, drumline and mascot added to the festivities and students participated in the El Dorado High School chant on the field.
Quincy Estrada, a senior and quarterback for Aztecs football, said he is excited to see all the teams that will play on the field and was thankful to SISD for making it happen.
“Academics is number one, but we are student athletes so having the right resources, such as this new turf, means everything,” Estrada said.
Walter Puentes, a senior and center back for El Dorado soccer, said the quality of the turf is critical for athletes’ performance and he is glad that the school has an improved athletic field.
“I feel very grateful today,” Puentes said. “Having access to this new turf makes me feel energized and motivated to play better.”
SISD Board President Eduardo Mena also addressed the students and staff about the exciting moment for El Dorado athletics.
“It’s a beautiful day at El Dorado as we celebrate this new and improved field,” Mena said. “I am so proud that we, as a school board and as Team SISD, have been able see this project come to completion for the good of our students. The new turf is important to ensure you have the optimal field to practice and play to the best of your abilities.”
Three other schools in Socorro ISD also are receiving an upgrade to their athletic fields. The improvements are being made at Americas, Montwood, and Socorro high schools.
