Teachers prepare for new year with WIN, BFF workshops

While students are enjoying their summer break, teachers in the Socorro Independent School District are already preparing for another successful school year with professional development workshops and trainings. Current summer professional development courses are for WIN Academy teachers, new teachers in the district and Gifted and Talented educators.

“We are excited to welcome back our growing WIN family and prep teachers with a variety of professional development to better serve students and meet their needs,” said Yvonne Aragon-Dominguez, English, Language Arts & Reading secondary instructional officer. “We are proud to provide them high quality resources that are proven to work. We invest in our teachers so they can in return invest in our students.”

WIN Academy teachers are participating in writing, math, instructional technology and Thrive curriculum workshops offered by instructional specialists and outside experts to maximize student achievement.

“The fact that the district provides these training is fantastic,” said Susan Reveles, a WIN teacher at Capt. Walter E. Clarke Middle School. “I hope to gain new experiences that I can take back to my classroom. As teachers we tell our kids to never stop learning because learning goes a long way.”

The nationally recognized Becoming a Friend for Tomorrow’s Future (BFF) new teacher mentor program allows first year teachers the opportunity to partner with mentors and learn the foundation of becoming effective teachers. The teachers will learn best practices, activities and strategies to have a successful year.

“I hope to gain new and engaging creative ways to draw students in at the launch of this new year,” said Raymond King, a new teacher at Col. John O. Ensor Middle. “My first impressions of the district were that everyone has high expectations and everyone is very friendly.”

The training also gives new teachers the opportunity to meet with mentors that will offer them quality instruction to model and support throughout the year to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.

The GT workshop will cover basic terminology, current definitions, models and theories on giftedness and will help teachers create an environment in which the gifted and talented students feel challenged and safe to explore and express their uniqueness.

“These workshops will help teachers identify the gifted and talented students in our district,” said Catherine Morrel, coordinator of advanced academics. “They will learn how to understand and enrich their students’ learning.”

The first day of school for Team SISD students is August 1.
