The Socorro Independent School District recently honored twenty-one employees whose combined service represented 538 years of commitment, dedication and excellence to the district.

Superintendent Dr. José Espinoza and Board President Gary Gandara paid tribute to the retirees, thanked them for their service and for being vital members of Team SISD.

“Thank you for your effort and commitment,” said Superintendent Dr. Espinoza. “You have been a role model for our educators. You have laid the groundwork and foundation, and made our district what it is today!”

One retiring employee had served Team SISD for almost as long as the district has been around. Clarice Jones, principal at Salvador H. Sanchez Middle School, has been an educator for 50 years, and has spent 46 of those years shaping the lives of Team SISD students.

The faculty and staff at Sanchez Middle School honored Jones with a celebration at the school.

“She has become our second mother,” said Shelley Barr, health instructor at Sanchez Middle School. “Ms. Jones is very positive, always encouraging us to do our best. She is a true leader and she will be greatly missed.”

Retiring SISD employees were honored at the regular board meeting on July 26 in front of family, friends, board members and district staff. Each retiree received a personalized photo collage to commemorate their time in the district and a lifetime activities pass to enter district sporting events for free.

From teachers to food service workers and administrators, the retirees gathered at a reception before the board meeting and shared special memories about their years of service in SISD.

“SISD was good to me,” said Ricardo Damian, who served the district for 33 years as a teacher and administrator. “All my years in education were in Socorro. The district gave me the opportunity to move up in my career, and I will always appreciate that. I will miss the high expectations of everyone in the district, and most importantly the students…they made my day.”

Congratulations to the 2016 SISD retirees!
