The Socorro Independent School District kicked off the 2019 graduation season celebrating graduating seniors at Options High School on May 30.

SISD Superintendent José Espinoza, Ed.D., and Options Principal Dr. Maggie Aguilar welcomed family and friends to the event. The celebration also featured an address from Region 19 Executive Director Armando Aguirre and several graduates.

“Options High School graduates, you have a bright future ahead of you,” Espinoza said. “As you move on from Team SISD remember to dream big! Never doubt yourself because you are capable of great things. With perseverance, you can do anything you set your mind to.”

Options High School is a non-traditional high school that offers numerous academic options and a unique competency-based learning system for students to earn their high school diploma.

“I had a great experience at Options High School,” said proud graduate Angel Ortega. “The principal and teachers really cared about my needs and that helped me get to where I am now. I’m really happy that this time has come.”

Like Ortega, many students were grateful to have support from highly qualified teachers and staff.

“My mom is in the military and she wasn’t going to be here for my graduation next year, which is why I decided to come to Options and graduate early,” said Sirena Silva. “I really liked Options. Everyone is equal and we are one big family.”

Proud parents and siblings were happy to see the graduates turn their tassels and walk on stage to receive their diplomas.

“I’m so happy and eager to see my son graduate,” said Lorena Marquez, a parent of an Options graduate. “This is a great school because students can work at their own pace, the teachers are attentive and keep the students accountable.”
