Students debuted new projects at 3rd annual Academic Technology Showcase
SISD students displayed innovative technology projects to show the importance of digital learning at the district’s third annual Academic Technology Showcase, which was celebrated Feb. 27 at the District Service Center.
The showcase allowed students to take part in specific challenges within a wide variety of categories, including digital storytelling, 3-D printing/models, video production and animation.
“This is a great day to remind all of us that technology is a big part of what we do at SISD,” said Instructional Technology Coordinator Miguel Moreno. “We’re here to showcase student work that they’ve done throughout the year and celebrate the efforts from our teachers through technology.”
SISD students took part in technology challenges during the showcase, such as the Sphero and Ozobot challenges, which featured ways to recycle and reducing pollution; an app challenge which was for future innovators; a video challenge for future video editors/producers; a Bulb digital portfolio challenge for students to record their skills, passions and ideas for potential employers.
This year, the theme was “20/20: A Tech Vision for Tomorrow” with a nod to the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Each student project had to be tied into some form of environmentalism or sustainability to connect technology with also being environmentally friendly.
“Events like these help with future research,” said Mission Early College senior Ximena Contreras. “Walking around and seeing all these different projects makes me want to do better as a student.”
Students were eager to debut their projects to not only the judges but to the community, who was invited to the showcase.
Pebble Hills High School senior Yaritza Corona said her team used SlingStudio, a wi-fi based portable, wireless multi-camera broadcasting platform to show the next level of live video production.
“Technology is evolving so much,” Corona said. “Many jobs in the future, if not already, are going to involve so much technology. I hope to create something that everybody can enjoy.”
