SISD Board approves boundary adjustments for 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years
The Socorro Independent School District Board of Trustees approved boundary adjustments for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years at the Nov. 16 regular board meeting.
The boundary adjustments were made to incorporate SISD’s newest combination elementary and middle school in the Eastlake feeder area, to maximize existing facilities in the district and to balance student enrollment.
The new combo campus, which is part of Bond 2017, is Ben Narbuth Elementary School, which is set to open in July 2022, and Eastlake Middle School, which is set to open in July 2023.
When planning for boundary adjustments, the district prioritizes being good stewards of all resources and respects families in the existing school communities, said Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services Marivel Macias.
“Whenever we have new schools opening up, we always want our community to trust in what we are doing,” Macias said. “Balancing is very important to us when we make these boundary adjustments.”
During the month of September, the district met with students, parents, community members, faculty and staff at nine virtual meetings and nine in-person meetings to explain the proposed boundary adjustments, answer questions, and gain feedback from SISD stakeholders.
Alicia Sanchez, a parent at Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary School, said she was grateful that the district asked for recommendations and input from parents and families in the district.
“It feels great to be included in these community meetings because I feel like we are a real community,” Sanchez said. “We love our neighborhoods, and we all want what’s best for our kids so I’m glad SISD put these meetings together for us.”
Claudia Ruelas, a parent at Eastlake High School and Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary, said she is excited for the new upcoming combo school.
“Change is always good,” she said. “The new school is going to open up many opportunities for the kids to make new friends, and ultimately expand our community.”
