SISD Foundation awards scholarships to 29 high school seniors
Twenty-nine high school seniors were awarded scholarships through the Socorro Independent School District Foundation Excellence in Education at a ceremony May 9 in the District Service Center board room.
The SISD Foundation distributed $67,000 to seniors from across the district as part of its annual scholarship program.
“The scholarships are priceless to these students, it will allow them to continue their education and give them their future,” said SISD Foundation Scholarship President Susan Hill. “Reading the applications of these students who are being awarded today gives me so much hope for the future because these are our future leaders.”
Every year the foundation awards three $3,000 scholarships to students at each of the six comprehensive high schools. One graduate at Mission Early College and Options High School each are also awarded a scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded to well-rounded students with criteria based on GPA, community service, teacher/counselor recommendations, and test scores.
Tililehin Adeniran, a senior at Americas High School and a foundation scholarship recipient, said that as the first child in his family to be going to college he hopes to set the example for his younger siblings, as well as others who are in his shoes.
“I’m here today in celebration of the SISD Foundation Scholarship,” Adeniran said. “I am truly grateful and thankful for the opportunity to have applied for this wonderful scholarship.”
Adeniran will be attending Texas State University to study biological sciences and plans to go to medical school to become a pediatrician.
Andrea Estrada, a senior at Socorro High School and a recipient of both the SISD Foundation Scholarship and the Bright Future Scholarship worth $1,000, said she is thrilled to get a scholarship because she does not want to put her parents in financial strain.
“I think we are all going to take advantage of the money we are getting from the SISD foundation because school is very expensive. It’s great to know we got the funding we need,” she said.
Estrada will be attending the University of Texas at El Paso where she will study biological sciences and she aspires to go to dental school for orthodontics.
The foundation scholarships are made possible through the district’s annual golf tournament and employee and community contributions. This school year’s golf tournament raised $92,000.
The SISD Foundation scholarship program provides thousands of dollars each year to help high school students continue their education in colleges and universities of their choice and help them chart a path to their future careers and aspirations.
The SISD Foundation began 17 years ago with the sole purpose of raising funds for student scholarships.
Since its inception, the foundation has awarded over $700,000 in scholarships to high school seniors to continue their path to higher education.
