Eastlake High School welcomes new head varsity softball coach
Ara Corbett was announced as the new varsity softball coach at Eastlake High School during a special announcement June 28 in the school’s gym foyer.
Corbett has worked in the Socorro Independent School District for 10 years. Most recently, he was a physical education teacher at Horizon Heights Elementary School. He served as the Eastlake interim head softball coach for the 2016-2017 season, when he led the team to a District 2-5A title and advanced to the regional quarterfinals that year.
Corbett was the head coach for the Eastlake High School varsity wrestling team from 2015-2018. He said he is eager to come back from a three-year hiatus as the leader of a high school team and looks forward to watching his own children play their respective sports.
“I am very happy to be back into head coaching duties,” Corbett said. “The year I served as interim, we went undefeated and won a district championship, so the expectations will be no less than that. We are in a very competitive division, and I refuse to settle for less.”
Eastlake softball players are excited to welcome their new coach to the school and are eager to play for him.
Paige Ontiveros, an upcoming senior and a softball player at Eastlake High School, said she is ready for her final year and hopes to make it her best one before moving on to play at the college level.
“I know Coach Corbett is going to be tough on us as a team,” Ontiveros said. “But I am ready for the challenges he will give us, and I hope we can exceed his expectations.”
