VASSP offers students chance to compete, have fun in sports

The SISD Volunteer After School Sports Program (VASSP) offers students in grades Pre-K to sixth an opportunity to participate in sports and recreational activities while motivating them to attain an interest in their classes and maintain their grade point average.
Currently, teams are being formed for the basketball competition which will begin in late February and continue through March. The track and field competition will begin in April.
Students interested may sign up at their school. Practices and games take place after school at the campuses participating. Students will compete in four divisions: minors division (Pre-K through 1st grade), intermediates division (2nd through 3rd grade), seniors division (4th through 5th grade) and pros division (6th grade).
VASSP was established in 2000 with only four schools participating and about 80 students. Last year, more than 2,000 students from campuses across the district participated.
Last fall, 116 teams participated in SISD’s 2012 VASSP intramural soccer league. More than two dozen students played from August to December at various campuses. The championship games were at the Student Activities Complex (SAC). Congratulations to the 2012 soccer champions. They are:
