More than 600 middle and high school students competed in the Socorro Independent School District science fairs and about 120 of those students will advance to the Sun Country Regional Fair on Feb. 22 and 23 at the University of Texas at El Paso.
“The SISD high school science fair was the most successful ever in many regards. The quality of projects was extremely high and several projects are equal to or above the quality associated with state competitions,” said Andrew Werner, SISD science coordinator.
The sweepstakes winner in the senior division (11th and 12th grade) was Marissa Ronquillo from Americas High School. She presented a chemistry project titled “Analysis of Plyphenylene Ether and Polyvinyl Chloride.” The sweepstakes winners in the junior division (9th and 10th grade) were Eastlake High School students Aaron Ruth and Alexis Lazcano for their Energy and Transportation project called "‘Alice’ Computer Aided Vehicle.” Both Winners competed at the Exxon/Mobile state science fair last spring.
More than 400 students competed at the SISD middle school science fair. About 60 middle school projects are advancing to the Sun Country Fair. John Drugan School earned the sweepstakes school award for the fourth year in a row. The school had the most first and second place winners.
“I’m extremely proud of our students. They are very hard working and very dedicated to science. We have a great group of teachers that support them,” said John Drugan’s science department chair Stephanie Carrasco.
John Drugan School had 51 students compete at the district fair and 21 advanced to the regional fair.
Every SISD high school, including El Dorado 9th Grade Academy, participated this year in the high school fair with 215 projects presented. Americas High School won the school award with 31 projects earning first or second place. Sixty-six high school students will advance to the Sun Country fair.

Sun Ridge Middle School student Zachary Hosler was the sixth-grade sweepstakes winner for his project in plant science. Jane A. Hambric School student Cameron Hill was the seventh-grade sweepstakes winner with her project in physics and astronomy. John Drugan School student Crystal Hsu was the eighth-grade sweepstakes winner for her project in computer science.
