Two of the three female athletes who earned this year’s prestigious Flo Hyman award in El Paso County are students in the Socorro Independent School District. Jane A. Hambric eighth-grader Cristina Fabela and Socorro High School senior Jocelyn Caro have earned the 2013 Flo Hyman Award given by the UTEP Women’s Athletic Department.
The Flo Hyman award recognizes top female student athletes for accomplishments and contributions in academics, athletics and leadership within her respective community. Each year, UTEP chooses the most outstanding female athlete from the elementary, middle and high school levels.
As Flo Hyman Award winners, Fabela and Caro were recognized and honored during El Paso's City Council meeting Feb. 19 at City Hall. They will be recognized and honored Feb. 28 at a VIP banquet in the Larry K. Durham Sports Center at UTEP and attend the UTEP vs. Rice women's basketball game that evening as VIP guests. They also will be recognized at halftime at the basketball game.
Fabela participates in volleyball, basketball, track and field and softball. She was the team captain of the volleyball team that earned the district championship. She was recognized by her coach and team as the Most Improved Player in basketball. She is active in Girl Scouts, the National Junior Honor Society and UIL academic events. She has participated in many community service projects, such as collecting food and toys for the Child Crisis Center and organizing the Pennies for Pasta drive to help children with leukemia.
Caro is a top-notch track and field athlete having completed another outstanding cross country season. She won first place in the district meet, she placed fourth in the regional competition and she finished the state competition in 11th place. She also earned All-Region and All-State Academic honors and is a two-time El Paso Times’ All-City team winner. Her coach says she is a leader on and off the track and field and has never missed a practice in four years.
The Flo Hyman Award recognizes that Fabela and Caro have made sports an important part of their success in life. The award was created in honor of Flo Hyman, an Olympic volleyball player who passed away suddenly from a rare heart disease. Hyman was a leader in sports and the community and she took an active role in promoting opportunities for women athletes.
Previous national Flo Hyman Award winners include Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Chris Evert, Mary Lou Retton, Billie Jean King, Bonnie Blair, and Monica Seles.
