About 900 parents, students and community members attended a community meeting to learn more about James P. Butler Elementary School and SSG. Manuel R. Puentes Middle School, the two newest schools in the Socorro Independent School District, on Feb. 28 at El Dorado 9th Grade Academy. Superintendent José Espinoza welcomed parents and community members and talked about the excitement in the SISD community about the opening of the new schools. Espinoza gave an update of projects in Bond 2011, including the completion of James P. Butler and Manuel R. Puentes schools and plans for the transformation of ED9 to become Pebble Hills High School. Construction of James P. Butler and Manuel R. Puentes schools will be completed in June. The schools will open for the 2013-14 school year in July with about 1,200 students enrolled. James P. Butler Principal Rosa Chavez-Avedician and SSG Manuel R. Puentes Principal Libby Tidwell were introduced at the meeting. Both principals are eager to welcome students and parents to the new schools. Chavez-Avedician said her elementary school will be “Leading the Pack” and they are going to be known as the “Howling Coyotes.” Tidwell said students will be proud to be in “Bobcat Country” at Puentes Middle School. The principals and SISD administrators answered questions from parents about registration, special programs and extracurricular activities at the schools. Parents were also provided with brochures with information on the schools and a 2013-14 SISD school calendar. In preparation for the opening of the new schools, more information will be available on the district website, in phone messages to parents, mail-out flyers and future parent night meetings. |
