Volunteers at recognition ceremony

Team SISD honored the incredible efforts of its dedicated volunteers and their invaluable contributions to district and student success at the annual SISD Volunteer Recognition and Awards Luncheon in April.

During the event, the district recognized the Volunteer of the Year from each school, along with the winners of the Parent Group Awards. Additionally, the awards included the Military Volunteer of the Year, the Elementary Volunteer of the Year, and the Secondary Volunteer of the Year.

“It is important to recognize volunteers for all their efforts and their contributions to our schools,” said Rachel Tarango, coordinator of Parent Volunteer Programs at Socorro ISD. “And we honor them with the importance of having them return and come back to help us as well, and the importance to assist teachers and staff with the duties that teachers may not get to do. They’re an extra pair of hands at the campus.”

Socorro ISD currently boasts more than 10,000 registered volunteers.

During the ceremony, Interim Superintendent James Vasquez and the board of trustees expressed their heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to the 50 outstanding Campus Volunteers of the Year, whose dedication and service at each campus has made a difference in Team SISD.

Josie Williams, Volunteer Sports Program district coordinator, was named Elementary Volunteer of the Year. Williams has been a volunteer in SISD for more than 20 years and has contributed more than 10,000 hours of service.

“I'm just amazed really. I feel wonderful,” Williams said. “I hope the program lasts another 10 years, and I'm able to keep it going.”

Adriana Ramos from Capt. Walter E. Clarke Middle School was named Secondary Volunteer of the Year. In addition to organizing various events, she has been instrumental in supporting emerging bilingual students and raising awareness for the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System, or TELPAS.

“I like volunteering because I like being in the environment in the place where my children studied,” Ramos said. “It’s about making the children feel comfortable being part of the community where they’re studying.”
