Students and employees in the Socorro Independent School District achieved an outstanding feat surpassing the district’s goal of reading more than 5 million minutes in the 2nd Annual All In for Reading: The Next Chapter challenge.

The reading challenge brought SISD together in a powerful celebration of literacy, engaging students and staff in a shared commitment to reading and learning. SISD students and staff collectively logged in 6,119,327 reading minutes during the challenge from February to May 2026.

“This year’s challenge highlights what is possible when campuses unite around a common goal,” said SISD Library Services Coordinator Marcy Sparks. “This would not be possible without our librarians, teachers, and campus leaders whose dedication, creativity, and commitment is inspiring a strong, district-wide culture of reading that continues to grow each year.”

Team SISD was committed to reaching the goal through active reading and shared encouragement. More than 18,000 total participants logged in their reading minutes to contribute to the overall reading achievement.

The top three schools were recognized for logging in the highest minutes across the district. The first-place winner, Col. Ben Narbuth Elementary, finished with 925,459 reading minutes and was awarded a prize bag and the reading challenge trophy. Pebble Hills High School won second place with 628,784 minutes and Horizon Heights earned third place with 381,690 minutes.

With the reading challenge, Socorro ISD increased independent reading time and consistency, strengthened the culture of reading across campuses and demonstrated the important role of librarians and campus leadership in driving engagement.

“We are especially grateful to Superintendent Mr. Vasquez, for his continued leadership and support of literacy initiatives, and for championing the vital role our school libraries play in student success and academic growth,” Sparks said.
