As the Socorro Independent School District begins the 2026-2027 school year, the district is ready to continue building on its progress and focus on the work that still lies ahead. Socorro ISD welcomes students and families back for the new school year on July 27 at 50 campuses throughout the district.
From leading the region in STAAR/EOC scores and maintaining a balanced budget to providing opportunities that prepare students for college, careers and life, Socorro ISD remains committed to providing every student with an exceptional educational experience while writing the next chapter of success together.
Academic excellence continues
Socorro ISD enters the new school year as the highest-scoring district in the El Paso region based on official State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and End-of-Course (EOC) results. Preliminary results for the 2025-2026 school year show the district continued to make gains over the previous year in every subject reported, reflecting the hard work of students, teachers and staff across Team SISD.
“Student success remains at the heart of everything we do,” said Socorro ISD Superintendent James Vasquez. “Our students continue to demonstrate tremendous achievement, and we are proud to be the highest-scoring district in our region. Their success is a testament to the dedication of our teachers, employees, families and community.”
Socorro ISD also remains the largest district in Texas to earn the Texas Education Agency Postsecondary Readiness Distinction Designation and continues to be recognized for preparing students for success beyond graduation. In addition, Socorro ISD has the five highest-scoring middle schools in Algebra I, as recognized through CREEED’s Aim High program, for the fourth year in a row.
Endless opportunities for every student
Socorro ISD continues to offer students endless opportunities, beginning with free Pre-K and extending through college and career pathways that help students graduate with a competitive advantage. Students have access to elementary academies, advanced academic academies, early college high schools, dual credit opportunities, Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, award-winning fine arts, championship athletics and comprehensive special education services.
These opportunities continue to deliver impressive results. SISD celebrated more than 3,800 graduates in the Class of 2026, which collectively earned approximately $93 million in scholarships, grants, military awards and dual credit savings. Nearly 500 graduates earned associate degrees, more than 3,300 students earned industry-recognized certifications, and students completed more than 40,000 dual credit hours. Socorro ISD also reached a significant milestone by surpassing 3,000 associate degrees earned by students districtwide through its early college and dual credit programs.
The district’s Pathway to Technology (P-TECH) programs are another opportunity for students to earn an associate degree and/or certification in a specific career area before they graduate high school. SISD offers P-TECH programs at all comprehensive high schools and students can choose from the following areas of study: education and training at all high schools or biomedical at Montwood High School, criminal justice at El Dorado High School, computer science at Eastlake High School, business at Pebble Hills High School, criminal justice at Americas High School, or pre-nursing at Socorro High School. Socorro ISD was awarded six grants totaling $100,000 from Educate TX in May to assist teachers in the P-TECH programs across the district to earn dual credit faculty credentials and/or industry-based certifications aligned to approved programs of study.
Financial stability and responsible planning
After overcoming significant financial challenges during the past two years, Socorro ISD enters the 2026-2027 school year on a stronger financial foundation. The district moved from a projected $42 million deficit to adopting a balanced budget for the 2025-2026 school year and has already adopted a balanced budget for the coming school year. The budget is based on responsible planning, realistic assumptions and a commitment to keeping resources focused on classrooms and student services. While progress has been made, district leaders recognize that important work remains ahead.
“Our district is in a stronger position today, but we know our work is not finished. Our teachers and staff have been doing more with less, students have felt the reductions, and campuses and departments have had to adjust,” Vasquez said. “While students are achieving and employees are doing extraordinary work, doing more with less should not become the expectation for the future. We must continue working toward long-term sustainability.”
Moving forward, Socorro ISD’s priorities are clear: strengthen financial stability, sustain and grow student achievement, work toward improved class size ratios, plan responsibly for enrollment and facilities, address long-term operational needs and rebuild trust in the district.
Socorro ISD remains focused on building a balanced path forward that supports employees and gives SISD students the same level of support available to students in surrounding communities. Over the last year of difficult decisions, reductions and community conversations, a shared principle has emerged: Socorro ISD students should be funded at the same level as students in surrounding communities.
Team SISD Senior Pass honors senior citizen community members
New for the 2026-2027 school year, Socorro ISD is launching the Team SISD Senior Pass, a special initiative that honors senior community members ages 65 and older who reside within district boundaries. Through the program, eligible participants will receive a complimentary pass that provides free admission to regular-season SISD athletic events and eligible fine arts performances throughout the school year. The pass is available to residents who reside in Socorro ISD boundaries and never expires once issued. The initiative reflects Team SISD’s commitment to honoring the generations who have helped shape the district while keeping them connected to the moments that bring the community together.
“The Team SISD Senior Pass is our way of celebrating the people who have supported our schools for
generations,” Vasquez said. “Their presence, encouragement and pride continue to make a difference in the lives of our students, and we are excited to welcome them to our events throughout the year.”

As students return to classrooms, Socorro ISD will continue providing a high-quality, rigorous and relevant education while strengthening the district for the future.
