Socorro Independent School District students in third to sixth grade expanded their imaginations by exploring space during the Gifted and Talented Program’s day camp on Sept. 30 at the District Service Center. The camp not only sparked creativity but also inspired a passion for learning about the universe.

Hosted by SISD’s Instructional Technology Department, students utilized their creative and problem-solving skills on a mission to outer space called Astro Quest.

Adriana Licon, an SISD instructional technology specialist, said the collaboration between IT and the GT Program provided a fun opportunity to engage students through technology.

“We live in a world that is surrounded by technology,” Licon said. “Our scholars learn through technology; they engage through technology. We pitched the idea that we could come together and bring both departments and provide this opportunity for our students.”

Andrew Moreno, a sixth grader at SSG Manuel R. Puentes Middle School, said he enjoyed collaborating with his team to find solutions to the challenges presented during their space mission.

His team recorded an interview with an astronaut who got lost in space and met an alien, which they shared with the other campers.

“I like the one where we're recording and trying to make like a little clip,” Moreno said. “It was funny. It was hilarious. Some of us were laughing. And I think some of us are going to be laughing hard once they see this.”

He said the GT program allows him to develop new skills, such as problem-solving, and reach for the stars.

“I think it might help me be smarter than I already am, help me overcome my challenges, and just live a good life,” Moreno said.
