Team SISD employees and their families laced up their sneakers for the 3rd Annual Dia de los Muertos Health Expo & 5K Run & 1 mile walk on Nov. 1 at the Student Activities Complex (SAC) I. The event promoted health and wellness while celebrating the community’s culture.
Sponsored by Aetna, the family-friendly event attracted hundreds of participants like Diana Serrano, who kicked off their Saturday morning with a brisk 5K run or a leisurely 1-mile walk around the SAC.
“I participated last year, and I thought it was a good way to spend a Saturday morning with family, with acquaintances from the district,” said Serrano, a PEN Project Region 19 Coordinator.”
Many participants adorned their exercise gear with colorful flower headpieces and painted their faces like sugar skulls to commemorate Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday that honors the deceased.
Attendees also had the opportunity to visit wellness exhibitors, participate in live fitness classes, enjoy a Kids Zone, and much more.
Celina Stiles, SISD chief human resources officer, said the annual event was an excellent opportunity to promote health in the community.
“We've partnered with Aetna and First Financial, and they're the ones that put everything together here. But really the idea is to bring wellness to the community,” Stiles said.
