The Socorro Independent School District celebrated its unsung heroes for their invaluable contributions to fostering a positive school community at the annual SISD Volunteer Recognition and Awards Luncheon on April 17.

The district honored each school’s Volunteer of the Year, Parent Group Award winners, and the Military, Elementary and Secondary Volunteers of the Year.

Rachel Tarango, SISD coordinator of Parent Volunteer Programs, emphasized that the district’s 10,250 volunteers deserve recognition for their vital support of students and teachers. These volunteers contributed 116,382 hours of service valued at $3.9 million.

“It's important to give them recognition because a lot of them think they don't deserve it, but they do so much. Sometimes they're there at the school even before some of the staff are there, and they're the last ones to leave at times,” Tarango said.

During the ceremony, district leaders and the Board of Trustees shared heartfelt thanks and congratulations with the 50 Campus Volunteers of the Year. Superintendent James Vasquez also shared a recorded video message, in which he expressed his appreciation for their commitment, time and willingness to serve. He said their contributions have made a significant difference in students’ lives and the success of district schools.

“Whether you are supporting classrooms, assisting teachers, helping with events, working at the district level, mentoring students, or contributing behind the scenes, your impact is felt every single day,” Vasquez said.

Carol Estrada from Hueco Elementary School was named the 2026 Elementary Volunteer of the Year. She has been volunteering for 14 years since her son was in Pre-K. He is expected to graduate from Socorro High School this June.

“We feel proud as volunteers because we know it benefits our school children,” Estrada said in a video shown during the event announcing her award. “And that’s what keeps us coming back, wanting to come and help.”

Iliana Montes from El Dorado High School was named the 2026 Secondary Volunteer of the Year. She said that she and her fellow volunteers enjoy helping others without expecting anything in return. She was surprised to be chosen for this prestigious honor.

“All these volunteers are amazing. I know that they put in so many hours, (and) I know how hard it is to give your time,” Montes said.
