Families across El Paso explored the wide range of academic programs and opportunities offered by the Socorro Independent School District to support student success at the 2nd Annual Recruitment & Enrollment Expo on June 18.

The expo provided parents and students with a firsthand look at the academic, extracurricular and real-world training programs designed to help students from PreK through 12th grade achieve their educational goals.

Jairo Esquivel and his wife chose to continue their family tradition by enrolling their three-year-old son in Pre-K at Mission Ridge Elementary School. Both Esquivel and his wife attended schools in Socorro ISD and graduated from Eastlake High School. They hope their son will have a positive experience like the one they had when they were in school.

“We were both in the Socorro ISD, and we were both in sports, and a lot of the teachers were really nice to us and helped us along the way,” Esquivel said. “So, we just think it's a really good district, and we hope it's the same for our son.”

Organized by SISD’s Elite Enrollment Committee, the expo aimed to encourage enrollment in SISD, the highest-scoring district in the El Paso region. The district provides free Pre-K, specialized elementary academies in science and art, dual-credit courses, early college high schools, advanced academic academies and Career and Technical Education programs to enhance student achievement and prepare learners for future success.

Kay Iwe, whose children will attend Chester Jordan Elementary School and Spc. Rafael Hernando III Middle School this fall took advantage of the district’s onsite enrollment services to ensure her children were properly registered.

She enrolled her children during last year's enrollment fair and appreciated how the district answered all her questions and allowed her to complete the enrollment process in one convenient location in the community.

“For me, this kind of seals the deal. Like I'm sure everything's here. I can ask questions, get anything off my list and just be ready for school,” Iwe said.

Angelica Hernandez, whose daughter is starting second grade at Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary School, brought her children, husband, sister-in-law, and nephews to enjoy the expo's fun family atmosphere. The event featured a car show, food trucks, games and student performances.

She said SISD’s family-friendly environment was one of the reasons she encouraged her sister-in-law to enroll her children in the district for the upcoming school year.

“The fact that it's like a community, like you make friends, like the teachers, like they become part of your family, I love that so much!” Hernandez said.
