Since she was three, Madison Patti has been involved in the Socorro Independent School District's Volunteer Sports Program (VSP). What began as a way for a preschooler to stay active has led her down a pathway of academic success, leadership and confidence.

Now an eighth grader at Eastlake Middle School, Madison is a straight-A student, co-president of the student council, a member of the National Junior Honor Society, a district track qualifier and an accomplished orchestra student. She credits much of her growth to the lessons she learned through VSP.

“When I first started VSP, it was really new, and from continuing it throughout my whole life, I've grown to be more responsible and to have a good attitude even when stuff goes wrong and to make sure I'm always helping out,” Madison said.

In recognition of her outstanding accomplishments, Madison was selected to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the Socorro ISD Board of Trustees regular meeting in October 2026.

Madison's journey in VSP began as a pre-K student at Mission Ridge Elementary School. The program is an all-volunteer, non-competitive after-school program in Socorro ISD that provides students from pre-K through sixth grade with opportunities to develop skills, build friendships and stay active through sports such as soccer, track and field and cheerleading. Through friendly competition and mentorship, the program helps students build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills that extend beyond the playing field.

Over the years, Madison has played soccer, competed in track and field, coached cheerleaders, served as a youth soccer referee and later helped coach younger athletes.

“I think it helps develop life skills. It teaches you how to be prepared for the stuff you're not ready for,” Madison said.

John Patti said VSP played a significant role in his daughter’s development, helping her build the confidence, discipline and leadership skills that have contributed to her success in school.

“Growing up in VSP has helped her tremendously through all of her education,” said John Patti, who serves as a volunteer area coordinator and a multi-sport coach and referee. “She's been a straight-A student the whole time. What we tried to prepare her for in middle school and high school sports is that she has to pass to play. That's something we've been implementing in the VSP program for our kids to understand that as we grow up, education comes first.”

Those experiences have helped Madison gain the confidence and leadership skills she needs to excel both in and out of the classroom.

At Eastlake Middle School, she serves as co-president of the Student Council, helping organize school events, coordinate spirit activities and lead projects that support students and staff. In recognition of its outstanding achievements, the council earned the 2025 Sweepstakes Award from the Texas Association of Student Councils.

Principal Gabriela Elliott said Madison’s leadership has helped to shape the school's positive culture.

“She’s a phenomenal straight-A student, well-behaved, a leader within our campus that promotes greatness within and represents us with a lot of pride, and she’s overall a great kid. And it's because of kids like Maddy that our school has been shining, and I couldn't be prouder,” Elliott said.

Madison is also a talented member of the school's orchestra, where she plays the viola. Since sixth grade, she has earned Division I ratings at the UIL Solo and Ensemble competition, the highest rating possible.

“My love for orchestra started when I was in fifth grade, and I really wanted to learn a new instrument, and the best way to do it was to join orchestra or band,” Madison said.

After participating in track through VSP, Madison transitioned to Eastlake Middle School’s track team and quickly found her passion. Last year, she qualified for the district track meet in both shot put and discus and finished fourth in district competition. Her athletic experience has also taught her to stay calm under pressure.

“I know what I'm good at, and I know what I'm bad at. So, if I just focus on what I'm good at, there's nothing to be scared about,” Madison said.

Although she has aged out of VSP, she continues to volunteer as a youth coach and mentor when needed.

“I like helping kids see what their strengths are and help with their weaknesses,” Madison said.

As she prepares to enter high school next year, Madison plans to continue participating in track, orchestra and student leadership activities. She hopes to attend Socorro High School and eventually pursue a career as a paramedic.

For Madison, VSP was more than a sports program. It was a place where she learned to lead, serve others and believe in herself. She encourages other students to step outside their comfort zones and always do their best.

“I really like pushing my friends to be the best they can and telling them, ‘Hey, you still got this ahead of you. You could still make a difference if you do this.’ I always push for the greater good in people,” Madison said.
