Inclement Weather Procedure and Communication

The Socorro Independent School District closely monitors weather conditions to determine appropriate action to ensure student and staff safety and optimal school operations.

Procedure

In cases of severe weather that could impact safe driving conditions and/or school operations, SISD will determine whether it necessary to close schools and district offices, delay the school day, cancel extracurricular activities, or have an early release.

The SISD superintendent, leadership team, emergency management and police department stay in close communication with the National Weather Service, El Paso City-County Office of Emergency Management, local law enforcement and other area school districts when torrential rain, snow or other inclement weather has the potential to affect the area.

The SISD inclement weather team monitors the forecasts, road conditions, and campuses. The team will communicate to district and campus leadership the type of inclement weather, area advisories or warnings, potential impact, day and time of impact and actions to be taken. In addition, district personnel will inspect neighborhood roads and facilities when extensive rain or snow has impacted the district.

Notification

If a change to the regular school day is determined, the announcement will be communicated in several ways:

  • The inclement weather message will be posted on www.sisd.net and district social media platforms.

  • A phone call, text, and/or email will be sent to all parents and staff for whom the district has current phone numbers.

  • The inclement weather message will be emailed to local news media.

Follow-up communication will be sent as necessary.
